Elected February 21, 2003
"I miss you Daddy"
Delmer “Del” Carroll was considered one of the greatest offensive players of his era, earning him the nickname “Mr. Speed.” One of his most remarkable talents was the ability to take the ball the length of the field and score, making him a real spectator favorite. Del was first rated 8 goals in 1949 and holds the distinction of being handicapped at 8 for ten consecutive years. He attained the 9 goal rating in the Arena.
During his 44 years of polo, Del Carroll played in nearly every major tournament, winning U.S. Open Championship titles in three different decades - 1959, ’67 and once again in 1974. In 1973 he won both the National 20 Goal and the National 16 Goal. His teams won the 1948 Senior Championship as well as the 1939 National 12 Goal. In 1950 he was selected for the USA team and participated in the 40 Goal Cup of the Americas.
Del Carroll's horses won $19 million and 2,115 victories during his 32-year career training Thoroughbreds at major Race Tracks.
His most famous Thoroughbred was Bee Bee Bee who won the 1972 Preakness and broke Riva Ridge's bid for the Triple Crown.
Del was a renowned horseman and one of the first players in America to selectively breed Thoroughbred horses for polo prospects.
In fact his legendary polo pony, named Magazin, sired many horses still competing in the game today.
Horses To Remember
Magazin
Inducted February 20, 2004
This well-known and loved 15.2 liver chestnut stallion was owned and played by Del Carroll for over 13 years. He won the Hartman award for Best Playing Pony of the U. S. Open in 1972. Sired in Argentina by Cardington King and out of Boutique, his pedigree was geared for racing rather than polo.
He was first acquired by Michael Phipps who raced Magazin with fair success until the age of 5. The Phipps were reportedly quite fond of Magazin but when Del Carroll expresses an interest in the horse, they proposed an unusual challenge, “Phipps told him he could have Magazin if he could make a polo pony out of him” remembers Kathy Linfoot, who ran Carroll’s polo stable and started Magazin in polo.. Magazin took to polo like a duck to water. “He was stick and balled twice and went straight to the polo field recalls Linfoot. The rest is history. At Magazin Farms, Magazin's daughter, Alicia, continues to grace us with beautiful natural prodigy. Alicia is the last producing Magazine daughter. Our farm is proudly named in honor of two great legacies, Del Carroll & Magazin.
